Liposuction is a form of cosmetic surgery that aids in fat removal from different areas of the body. Liposuction is usually undergone by people who are overweight or those who have a difficult time getting rid of excess fat deposits. They do it in an attempt to change the shape of their bodies.

There exists various techniques to perform a liposuction, ranging from the traditional method, laser aided, ultra-sound assisted, and the tumescent technique. Modern techniques have ensured that the procedure is safe and is carried out with utmost care.

What Is Traditional Liposuction?

Traditional liposuction is a process where a cannula is used to suction out the fat cells from beneath the skin. The cannula is inserted into an incision on the skin and this cannula is further attached to a vacuum device. Manual force is used to break up and loosen the fat cells under the skin which are then extracted out of the body through suction.

This method is slightly outdated as there have been new advancements in the technology and techniques used to perform the same procedure.

What Is Tumescent Liposuction?

On the contrary, tumescent liposuction is a better and more efficient method that incorporates a genius technique and is safer in comparison. The tumescent technique refers to the injection of large amounts of diluted local anesthesia which results in the swelling of the targeted area. After this, the cannula is inserted and the fat cells are removed.

As local anesthetic is directly injected into the subcutaneous regions, there exists no need to provide any other form of sedation or general anesthesia. This in turn reduces blood loss.

The Difference

As is vastly clear, traditional liposuction relied on manual breaking up of the fat cells which in turn resulted in bruising, heavy loss of blood, and infections. The tumescent liposuction method injects a solution of adrenaline that shrinks the blood vessels, preventing it from bleeding out and the amount of anesthetic injected is large, which results in the effective removal of only the fatty cells.

More so, the usage of anesthetic is the reason why sedation need not be provided to the patient. This further reduces blood loss and downtime. The local anesthetic in the tumescent method helps a patient recover much faster in comparison to the general anesthetic used while performing the traditional liposuction technique.

The extra fluid in the body has to be removed extensively in the case of the traditional method, which is a painful affair. In the case of the tumescent method, there is no need for excessive draining and the discomfort is minimal. The results can be seen faster in the tumescent procedure, while the traditional method requires a longer amount of time to reflect the changes your body has undergone. This is due to the longer time required for healing.

The chances of the traditional method going wrong resulting in thrombosis, infections and excruciating pain is much higher. The after effects of the tumescent method are not this dangerous as the technique employed requires only a small incision and local anesthesia.
